Inspiration

In my quest to complete culinary school weighing less than I started, I search for blogs that inspire, inform and entertain me. Most blogs only fulfill two of the three criteria. Being entertaining is by far the most difficult challenge bloggers face.

One blogger who fills my entertainment desires is Dinner is Served. She makes me giggle, inspires me and makes me thankful for 2014.

Some great things happened in 1972. Bobby Fischer beat Boris Spassky to become the World Chess Champion. The last US ground troops were withdrawn from Vietnam. The Equal Rights Amendment which provided for sexual equality was passed by the U.S. Senate. Digital watches became available, Abba was formed and my husband was born. Unfortunately, these successes did not translate into the typical U.S. kitchen.

At Dinner is Served, what started as a tribute to 1972, making dishes from an avocado green box of recipe cards, has metamorphosed into a tribute to dishes of home-cooks past. Blogger Emily has been recreating the recipes, which were originally available at service stations (20¢ with fillup!), with the intent to make all 205.

Being a weight watcher, oh yeah, and living in 2014, Emily has had to make some changes and substitutions. She's working her way through them, as well as some other gastric delights (Bisquick, anyone?). Along the way, she also shares some of the ups and downs in her life.

You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll learn from her mistakes. Okay, maybe not that last one. After all, if you're writing a blog, everyone wants to laugh at the mistakes!
